Dear Thayer Evans,
Wow. You've caused quite a stir amongst the Auburn family.
For those people out there who don't know you, let me post your picture, happily copied from foxsports.com...considering you aren't popular enough for name/face recognition.
Your picture makes you look handsome, although that hair is a bit spiky. Based on your picture, I would assume you were a cocky sports writer who is still resentful that you were unable to play quarterback professionally or be a top scoring baseball player. Those sideburns indicate that you wish you were still playing ball rather than writing about people who actually make a living doing so.
Oh, wait. Is that me making assumptions? Pardon me. I was just replicating the type of journalism you claim to be using against Cam Newton.
Thayer, you seem to be missing the point. Your articles encourage Heisman votes not to vote for Cam Newton because he 1) is guilty until proven innocent and 2) things were too good to be true with him.
Mr. Evans, who would you like to vote for then? Lamichael James who was arrested for assault of his girlfriend in 2007? Oh, but we can forgive him, right? That was in 2007. Cam Newton cheated on a test in 2008. That one year makes it more recent, and therefore worthy of the headline of investigative journalism.
Look, if you wanted to write gossip pieces and tabloid-like pieces, why didn't you go to work for TMZ? At least their digging for dirt is on celebrities rather than college aged kids you are infinitely jealous of. Perhaps you were told this was journalism or investigative reporting, but you have actually launched a smear campaign of a young player who is more talented than even Superman Tim Tebow. Maybe he doesn't wear Bible verses on his face during a game or have missionary parents, but he is singularly one of the most talented players of recent years.
(But didn't the same news media make fun of Tebow for proclaiming his Christianity? Decide what you want to see, Evans. Too Christian or someone who worked to come back from a dark time in his life? I'm confused as to what you really want.)
What's next, Thayer? You plan to find a traffic camera showing Cam Newton littering along Donahue Drive? Or maybe that was him crossing the street on College Street somewhere other than a cross walk?
Leave the sleazy reporting to US Weekly and OK Magazine, and get back to making the Heisman about talent and not morality.
Sincerely,
Someone Who Thinks You Should Apply For A Gossip Rag
