An Open Letter: Ray McAllister (And Others)

Dear Mayor Ray McAllister (The Mayor of Vincent, Alabama),

Wow. Can you believe it's been over a year since this whole Vincent Quarry debate started? I can't.

Can you believe it's been almost 2 years since you ran for mayor? That's hard to believe too. It's almost hard to believe its been so long since you sat underneath the carport of my grandparent's house with my mom and the amazing man who was my grandfather.

It's probably so long ago that you don't remember telling him that if you got the position of mayor, you would never support a quarry coming to the town. In fact, I do believe that's how you convinced my grandfather to vote for you.

Hmm.....some politicians will do anything to be elected, including lying to a lifelong resident of Vincent. For some reason, I just assumed you were better than that.

But who cares about the value of your word, right, Mayor McAllister? Maybe Vincent Hills Quarry will name a board room in your honor to thank you for your hard work as their puppet.

Sincerely,
Someone Who Regrets Voting For You

P.S. Will you share this letter with Don Driggers (who sits on the Vincent Zoning Board)? I know you are deep down a good man, so I doubt you "hang" with the likes of him on a regular basis. But still....

******************

Dear Don Driggers of the Vincent, Alabama Zoning Board,

Thank you for being so engaged during the debate over the quarry. You were always classy, engaged and alert at every single meeting. (And I sincerely hope you are smart enough to understand the sarcasm dripping in the above sentence.)

Oh, by the way, you yelled at my mother and told her that my grandfather wouldn't live to see the quarry come to Vincent because, in your words, "He'd be long gone and dead" by the time they started breaking ground. You had my mother crying at the end of that discussion, didn't you?

Turns out, Mr. Driggers, you were right. Just a few months after that discussion, my beloved grandfather passed away.

I will forever associate your name with that discussion. That and.....well....you know the other thing.

Sincerely,
Lindsay Kathryn Smith

My graphic on Don Driggers is elementary, but it is a perfect depiction of his attention and integrity during this entire debate. In my humble opinion, he is one of the most classless representatives Vincent has on any of its boards and a disgrace to the city.

As for Mayor McAllister, the post speaks for itself. He lied while looking into the eyes of an elderly, life long citizen of Vincent. He may be a nice man, but during this issue, he proved that money is more important to him than dignity.

Thank you for your comments. I will check out your site as well.

Sometimes elementary takes an otherwise run of the mill picture and elevates it to new heights.

We agree with you about Driggers and have heard through the grapevine that he, along with some others in city hall, agree WRQ will "flick us off like a flea eventually, but Vincent will get what it can out of them before they do."

Nice.

Good strong reasoning for voting for the quarry you fools.

We have heard your story from others and think you have it pegged on what the real intent of Mayor McAllister was; it was smoke and mirrors from the beginning, deliberate at that.

The corruption and inside baseball going on with this quarry from Columbiana to Vincent, as well as Montgomery is under great scrutiny and eventually all will come to light.

Stay after this and so will we.

Glad you like our page and feel free to contact us if you wish to contribute anything to it.

We truly want the Vincent citizens to have a voice.

Katie, my name is Nicole and I am a journalist in Auburn. I saw this post and was wondering if you and/or Max would be willing to be interviewed for a story I'm doing on the quarry. If you are interested please email me at loggirn@tigermail.auburn.edu as soon as possible. Thanks!

Who do you write for?

I don't know many "serious journalists" whose Facebook page is entitled: "F U Alabama, War Damn Eagle" like yours is "Nicole" or whoever you really are.
Nice try, but not really.
What is it you are really after?

She's an Auburn student, Max, doing research for an article that might be published. I talked to her last night.

I had to do an article like this when I was in school at Auburn. It's innocent, really.

Be that as it may, I stand by what I said about the inappropriateness of a Facebook page entitled what hers is.
Published can mean many things in many different types of publications. Some more notable than others.

The fact that WRQ has "friends" at AU tends to make things a bit dicey when AU is mentioned, such as one of their shady geologists (how many is that now 3?) Robert Fousek from AU.

He's not the only AU tie with WRQ.

I have read the comments. More focus should be on Vincent government and the upcoming elections. This will be a chance for Vincent citizens to voice their distrust for the Vincent government as well as the Shelby County Commissoners.

Dear Recent Anonymous,

I'm not sure what your point is. This was a letter written from my personal perspective about the Mayor Ray McAllister and his interactions with my grandfather. I never intended for this to be about upcoming elections.

You can't make a comment to the Shelby County Reporter. When you try to log-in, it is always an error about logging in previous. I think the pre quarry issue so many people responded to by e-mail is still in the list of the Shelby County Reporter that will block you.
